Historically known as a gate, and more commonly referred to today as an Internet site, Brad Oldham and Christy Coltrin saw a portal as a dynamic point of transition and ideal imagery for a donor-recognition sculpture for Southern Methodist University. Viewers see a grouping of sculpted bronze books coming off the mirror-polished stainless-steel wall behind; these books are positioned to allow for a 36” diameter portal in the middle. This portal will draw the viewer in to look closer, at which point they may see themselves in the polished stainless-steel portal. Reflection is a key point of engagement in setting the mood for the viewing experience and reflecting on the transformative impact the school has on the lives of its students.
