Map Wall

The Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile, Chicago, Illinois  |  Aluminum, Wood, Resin, and Antique Pewter Finish  |  9’ x 20’ x 3"

The Map Wall sculpture by Brad Oldham was interpreted from an antique Rand McNall & Co.’s New Street Number Guide Map of Chicago from 1910. Oldham used a combination of raised and lowered sections to create a look and feel of the city and its landscape. As the roads dictate the shape of this artwork, it’s interesting to consider the social and utilitarian aspects of such streets. The sculpture is made of mixed media, fiberglass, wood, aluminum, resin and seven layers of paints to achieve the final finish. The intention of the cut outs was to enhance the beauty of the deep blue glass behind the sculpture. The Map Wall sculpture required approximately 340 hours of handwork to complete.
